Samsung Omnia- A personal review
By Steve Ouradnik of New Life Painting
This is one user's experience with the Samsung Omnia- your mileage may vary. After several months of elegebility for an upgrade to a new phone with Verizon Wireless I finally decided on a Samsung Omnia. My decision was influence in no small way by a great sale price and some relatively glowing reviews on several popular websites. Once the phone arrived, I quickly transfered all my old contacts, added a few apps that I thought would be helpful, and excitedly set out to use my new phone. One of the reasons I purchased this phone was the ability to use Google Maps for navigation without paying additional fees. I was very pleased with the display of the maps on the screen, but found it difficult to get a lock on the GPS satellites- not dependable. The most frustrating thing though was reception of the phone itself. While working in a well to do area of the county on a job that lasted several months, I was restricted to about a 3 foot square area in the driveway for making and taking calls. This was the only place I could initiate a call, and if the phone actually rang somewhere else in the house (often it didn't even ring) the call would drop as soon as I answered it. Meanwhile my partner, who also has Verizon service, was able to make calls anywhere on the property without problem! The camera on this phone is fantastic (you can see pictures on our website), and I found a lot to like about the PDA functions, but the main reason I have a phone is to stay in touch with family and clients! Seems to me Samsung and Verizon both could have put a little more effort into ensuring the great signal I've come to know and love. To Verizon's credit, they do have a fantastic customer satisfaction policy, and some of the best customer service representatives in the business. All you need to do is be patient with them and they will take good care of you. We are well on our way to resolving my issues, and I look forward to a long relationship with Verizon. One thing I would like everyone to take away from this article is to hold the independent review sites to a slightly higher standard. There are many good sites, but they spend too much time on the frills and the interface, and seem to have forgotten the main reason most of us have a phone- to stay connected when we're out and about. I have yet to find a site that posts hard signal strength data for comparing phones. If they would do that it would hold manufacturer's and supplier's feet to the fire and help everyone improve their product. So please, in addition to getting after your service provider, let's contact the reviewers and ask them to post numbers that give us a more objective idea of a phone's reception. Bars and descriptions of experiences don't give much to compare with- we need numbers that are as objective as size, weight, and battery life. |

One of these days they're going to make a phone and forget to put the 'call' function in.
At the end of the day a phone is useless without good reception isn't it. Well that and good battery life. I think that sometimes they focus so much on fancy features that they forget the basics. Nice article, well reviewed.
